Life Ready SC teaches Florence middle schoolers the practical life skills school never covers — free, hands-on, and taught by local volunteers.
What we teach
The Problem
Most young people leave school without knowing how to change a tire, fix a leaky faucet, handle a household emergency, or introduce themselves professionally. These aren't small gaps — they're skills life requires every single day.
These gaps hit hardest for youth who lack access to mentors, tradespeople, or hands-on learning at home. No existing South Carolina program addresses this in a focused, practical, after-school format for middle schoolers.
Life Ready SC is here to fix that.
A 16-year-old gets a flat tire on the side of the road. She doesn't know how to use the jack in her trunk. She sits there for two hours — because nobody ever taught her what to do.
That's a failure of preparation, not intelligence. The Program
Students ages 11–14 rotate through six-week hands-on modules, meeting two afternoons per week at a partner Florence middle school. All instruction is provided by local volunteer professionals.
Tools, basic repairs, plumbing, electrical safety, and understanding a utility bill. Students leave knowing how to use a wrench, patch a wall, and shut off the water.
Checking and changing oil, reading tires, jump-starting a battery, what to do in a breakdown, and understanding basic insurance. Real skills for the real road.
First aid, CPR, calling 911 effectively, fire safety, and weather emergencies. Students graduate knowing how to help — and how to stay calm when it matters most.
Introductions, professional etiquette, conflict resolution, and communication. The soft skills that open doors — taught as practical tools, not rules.
Students who complete all four tracks earn a Life Ready SC Certificate and a home & auto starter toolkit — theirs to keep.
